this thing called a bachelor of fashion design

Saturday morning – status – dead tired, overworked and anxious !

So it’s the weekend before my last term of college commences… I’m not quite sure whether I’m stressed, relieved, nervous, or happy – It all feels kind of surreal.

Sometimes we have so much going on that even the biggest events pass by like a breeze, all that stress, hard work and effort become quickly brushed into the past.

Notice how we spend so much time working up to things, then so much time looking back on them ? Realise how the actual event just came and went!

Sometimes things aren’t so bad I guess.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking in this two week break. I wouldn’t really call it a “ break” though as I’ve been tirelessly sewing/sampling and working. I know I’ve kind of disappeared since my last post on Easter but those weeks have just flown by so quickly that I’m only just taking control, taking one step back and breathing !

* * *

When I came back from LA in July 2009 I was all freshened up and relaxed. I knew that if I wanted to give my absolute best to “this thing called a bachelor of fashion design” I had to have the right mind. The first two classes I had in my first year were Fashion design studio and Colour Theory. I remember thinking “oh just making skirts and learning different types of silhouettes, working with different paint mediums – this is alright, it’s not too bad – a bit too much work to do, but I guess its alright”.

See when you are new to things, they are fun and exciting,  whether they remain that way and if you’re up for the challenges as the terms get harder and harder, that’s the real test.

I remember using a MAC for the first time and thinking WHAT THE HELL IS THIS !?!?!?! and learning how to use Photoshop and illustrator – that was a triple Trip out for me ! Then of course design studio part 2, where we had to design a range  as well as make one the shirts from our range – Looking back on that, I always giggle because back then I thought that was hard and stressful. I used to say to myself – “Oh my god I’m struggling to do this, I wonder what my state will be like when I’m in third year?!” – It’s made me realise how much I’ve grown, how much I’ve learnt, how it’s shaped what I’ve become and what I know. All the things I’ve sacrificed, all those parties, night outs, festivals and trips – was it worth missing all these things ? Honest answer of course is a yes. You never lose your true friends, trust me on that – it’s true – I still have all mine – if not, I have many more than I began with. After you learn to expect less from people around you and learn how to become a bit more independent you learn how to give things up and think more about you rather than for other people all the time, it becomes natural. It’s not a bad thing, it just becomes clear what your priorities are. It took a long time for me to get my priorities straight. Regardless, I always put college first, like I’ve mentioned many times before, college saved me, it was like it was always there, always giving me something to do, keeping me company through heartbreaks, life dramas and crisis’ There was no escaping it with that workload.

…and just when you think you’ve grasped the game of “this thing called a bachelor of fashion design” you head into your second year – swimwear, fashion shows, more theory, more prac, more draping, more new skills – you’re bombarded with all these new things. The most important part through this is that you keep true to what you’ve been doing, you never give up and you never let the team down. I’ve kept this mindset, and it’s always kept me strong. Another thing I noticed as the terms went on was that our classes got smaller and smaller – the amount of stress, budget, workload – some people just aren’t cut out for it.

At the end of 2010 we had a fashion show, like we do every year. My swimwear was in this show and the feedback from people, their expressions and their opinions motivated me a lot, it’s the final point – the return to start card, it’s like saying “ oh marvellous, great talent ! now go refresh, do your thing again, start a new range and excite us all again”. When people want more, and expect more it’s exciting, especially for someone young, and fresh like me !

To read my previous blog post on my swimwear just click the picture below.

After a long summer/Christmas break it was time to tackle 2011. By this stage I thought the experimentation process would be over and done with until of course I had to do knitwear as a subject. I’d always wanted to learn how to knit, however I’m sure after all that curiosity it’s something I won’t be doing sometime soon. hahahaha !! I remember looking back to 2009 and thinking WOW where did those two years go ! They had just flown !! LA felt as fresh as the day before, expect for the fact that two years had gone by and I was almost reaching my final year !!

(Just click the photographs to get linked to the blog posts from that photo-shoot/range)

After doing the photo-shoot for my knitwear, relying on the great skills I had learnt from working with stylists and designers from Fashion week and the Westfield show as well as interning at Ladakh, the flow of things came naturally, and it actually felt good handling my own work, my own shoot, my own team.

But hey – It’d doesn’t stop there !

Because I had started in July – My year began in July, meaning that straight after knitwear and being sick came mens and womenswear ! Till this day – I look back- I just don’t know how I managed to get it done. Again, all I can think of is the beginning and the end. All that stuff in between just untangles itself and the magic happens.

One of the most valuable things I learnt during men’s and women’s is that You learn that people who have always supported you will always of course be there if they are genuine, the people who are envious always talk shit no matter how much you ignore them and newcomers that have somehow made it into your life were sent by some “saviour of events” to help you through things you thought you’d never be able to accomplish!

Many favours, many volunteering events, networking – it all pays off – But don’t be fake ! I’ve always been myself, at times an honest bitch, and at others I’ve bitten my tongue, but all with good reason.

The following photographs were all possible because of the amazing team I had. I’m so proud of myself, to see what I’ve achieved. It’s a great feeling.

So guess what that left me with – one semester to go and major work approaching.

It’s only April and already in the first 4 months so much has happened ! The first term of the semester is done, I’ve completed all my subjects besides major work of course, my brother got married, we also lost some loved ones along the way, and just so many more other things !!

* * *

So it’s the weekend before my last term of college commences… I’m not quite sure whether I’m stressed, relieved, nervous, or happy – It all feels kind of surreal.

I’ve waited for this moment, this feeling for so long and I think I’ve become so used to the nature of “this thing called a bachelor of fashion design” that I’m actually coping okay ( apart from all the stress and hair I’ve lost hahahaha) It is still very hard, but I guess the previous years kind of built my expectations up, they’ve moulded me into a strong little seamstress !

All the final bits of fabric shopping are getting done – tiring days driving long distances from one supplier to another – I love that part though – Fabrication is really important to me, The feel of it, the composition…

IMG_9901

mmm I can smell the leather every time I look at this picture ! I love this place !

so Sample marking is on Tuesday, They aren’t perfect but they are just samples, I actually can’t wait for college to start again. I love seeing my things come to life – not by samples but by their actual fabrics, trims and embellishments. The story comes to life. I love the hype and stress of things – the fast-paced environment !

I made this video a few months ago – So I could show you guys my findings from Fabric shopping phase #1 !  p.s the video just ends randomly !

fabrics phase #1

Well the journey goes on, and I hope this fills all the gaps for you guys. I haven’t disappeared completely, I’m still here – just working very very hard And of course as this is the life of Rhy I’ll share many things with you guys along the way !

The bigger the better !

Photo-shoot Prep | Rainy day outside but a rather sunny one at T.L.O.R Headquarters !

Woke up this morning and let’s be honest – who didn’t want to go back to bed with the weather being so S#!t ????? As you could of imagined what was supposed to be a bright summer awakening started to feel like a rather sluggish wintery morning! BUT that didn’t necessarily mean a fun days of work wasn’t about to begin.

Here at T.L.O.R head quarters I have been busy expanding the RATAVOSI men’s and women’s collection with additional women’s looks for our Amore Amore Photo-shoot.

I’ve been crazily sourcing props and accessories from all over the place as well as locations to give the right touch to all our looks.

In fact, Perfect Timing for Valentine’s Day !!!!

Mid last week, I ordered a cute red wide brimmed hat and some cat eye sunnies to go with the “midnight rendezvous dress” (oh and a pair of white ear muffs JUST FOR FUN hahaha)– what felt like a knock and run today, brightened mine and my best friends day.

2 brown parcels from ASOS… oh yes oh yess !! Happily tearing apart the boxes, there they were ! It always feels so exciting and rewarding when you get a parcel at the door, I love the feeling, it almost feels like it’s your birthday ha !

And well knowing the two of us ( the usual ) decided to do a silly little luvo session with the new pieces.

Just a regular day at the office. Check it out  haha

Mens and Womens | Marking Day

IMG_8066

IMG_8067

Just a quick shot from the marking day | Full story here.

The journal entries before the due date. | Mens and Womens wear part duex

As we all know I’ve been busy as hell trying to get my toosh into order for a very hectic time of year in a “ fashion student world ”. So I finally Present to you the entries of this time as I couldn’t blog them right away.

Monday – the 14th of November – first week back into it fully –

All I have are my patterns, myself and my fabrics. Some things need tweaking, others need redesigning and reworking or just simply need to be sewn. Status about getting finished right now is “totes not going to get there”

Tuesday – the 15th of November

8 more days – all I get done is the bustier shell – Freaking out process starts to kick in, in the later hours of the night.

Friday – the 18th of November

By Friday all I had done was a bustier shell, separate front and back pieces for my ladies pants, and a very small no seams Ponte dress silhouette and that’s about it. So many problems begun to arise and soon enough I had all these negative thoughts up in my head about not being able to finish on time ! By the late afternoon the pants were ready to go with something as stress-less as a hook and bar to be sewn onto the waistband. Something in my paranoid little head made me want to put it on someone with a model like figure to really make me believe that another garment could be almost finished. Luckily there were fit models next door – unfortunately, as i had anticipated, her foot couldn’t make it through the tight jodhpur leg (the zips I added just weren’t long enough) ! yes – you guessed it – that meant NOT a finished garment, but one that had to be unpicked as well as new longer zippers being bought ! A disastrous cigarette leg that not even an anorexic leg could fit into What a great way to end the college week – some more disappointments, greater stress to calm level. Not one complete look and menswear hadn’t even begun !

I’d been working long hours, every day AND night – was the slightest bit of progress too much to ask for ? Seriously, Haven’t I been through enough ?

The weekend

So the weekend arrived, I had to suck it up even more and work even harder as I was the only one far, far behind ! It was very hard  – not recovered well, hardly eating or resting – it was painful and yes I whinged and cried and threw little tantrums ( tantrums that  I personally felt I was entitled too !) I tried to do my best with my men’s looks as the dying and bleaching had to be done on the weekend or else it would never dry in time ! Slight success with the colours, but I was still a little “iffy”.

Monday – Week that its due – 21st of November

And again all I have completed is a bustier and now a men’s top that I used as a replacement ( there was no way that I could have my men’s jacket done in time – no leather left, no money, no time)

It was all about reworking and trying to stay on task, as hard as it was – I was able to do it.

I tried my hardest to sew the shell of my jacket with the help of a very lovely family friend who assisted me along the way ! ( for that, I greatly appreciate her time and efforts )

At this stage, the men’s pants needed to be sewn as they had now been treated and were at drying, the ladies jacket and ladies dress both needed to be worked and that was all left for the only machine time before the marking on Wednesday afternoon !

Wednesday 23rd November – a Day before the marking

Time : 9.40 pm

Status: just got off the train, super tired – body about to shutdown.

I had my final booking with my machinist “ Connie” on Wednesday  (Connie – who it would have been impossible without – I thank her a million times over !)

I had been working very late every night last week and this week as well, trying to get the collection done. Aiming to bring to life a collection within a tight period of one and a half to two weeks was not easy. The weather was dull and Rhaya Ratavosi was definitely not going home – no way – not until all of this had been done ! I had been working too hard now and had put my body through so much pain to just quit now and not have anything done ( AND BESIDES  its totally NOT MY STYLE – to not finish something I Begun, that’s a big fat FAIL for me ). After a long day working my heart away, i was relieved to see the collar on the dress being sewn and buttonholes being marked. That meant the last thing that would complete my collection was almost done.

So i finally get home and the buttons and buttonholes get done – they weren’t perfect like I would usually have them but a home job here and there I can live with.

Overall, I’m quite proud of myself. I hope they are proud of my efforts and accomplishments too ! That would really make my year !

Here’s to a  very short but well-earned 4 and a half hours of sleep before I have to be up again.

Thursday – Marking Day

8.50am – my first model arrives. Just seeing the process, from my own eyes and knowing what I went through, witnessing the first look on a live model, was just divine ! It felt so good – like everything Id been putting my  health up for was finally up in my face complementing me back. Marking went great, with only a few minor changes here and there, they were proud of me and I was very pleased with the outcome. Looks like all the hard work paid off. Now only a little bit more stress to go until it’s really all over.

Let me be an example – an example for those people who think they  cant achieve what they want to achieve. Let this be an example to  give courage, faith and belief to people, to have it in themselves , that they are capable of doing  impossible things. Let it inspire those who at times burn out and need guidance. You’re not alone – I used to think I was – but we’re not. Do what you have to do, go for what you want to go for – don’t let others chose that for you.Plenty of people go through life changing things, misfortunes, and challenges on a daily basis – it all  depends on how you chose to conquer it. Will you sit back and state the obvious that you’re a fragile being that cant do anything or will you  suck it up and pull through it because u are still the same person deep down – a dam fighter ?

I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t easy. It never is ! It’s not easy to be motivating yourself at all ! In fact, I didn’t think Id make it but there I was Thursday morning coming home from marking sitting on a train and thinking to myself F*#k I did it – its done. OMG ! I’m a bloody legend. ha-ha !

Last night having something as little as buttons and buttonholes to do – yes it took long for it too finish and yes it was quite late into the night and sleep was a minimum but after all I’ve sacrificed I’m sure that part was the easiest. The feeling that a big weight ha been lifted off your shoulders is the most rewarding relief ever. To be able to look back and see how Quickly I was able to turn over the pieces was amazing !

After all – by tomorrow this event will be part of the past… see…

Well it’s time for the ‘dnm’ to be over – I took some quick shots of my collection. Hope you enjoy them.

IMG_8066

before I end this post I’d love to thank everyone who was part of this, from dealing with my stresses to helping me bring the collection to life ! I love you all.
