LA Diaries | Part Un

hmmm.. so where do I start for the La diary ? I actually thought this would be easier but to be honest the weeks have gone by so quickly, it feels like it was a long long time ago.

I’m going to try my best to re-tell it through photos for you all.

But before I do that, I just want to touch on the word “Family”. Family to me is a very important thing, especially my immediate family. We are a tight, loyal bunch who are always there for each other no matter what. Here, in Australia I don’t really have as much family as I do overseas. So there is always this sort of… hole in my heart, and I do miss them often, quite alot actually. It’s funny though when I tell people I miss my cousins, they look at me in shock. I guess sometimes people don’t appreciate and realise just how lucky they are to have the warmth of loved ones around them in the same state or country.

So in saying this, I just want to let my family know that wherever you are in the world, no matter how far apart we are I love you and Miss you and I wish we could be with each other always. And if you are reading my blog, thankyou, I just wanted to let you know just how important you are to me, even if you already knew that.

Travelling overseas, isn’t always about experiencing the culture, the surroundings, the food, it’s also about spending as much time as you can with the people you love. This time around though, I didn’t get to do that much, too little time and busy running around – before I knew it, Time was up and it was a long flight back home. But I guess that’s okay because there will always be a next time, another opportunity to catch up.

What I love though, Is that every time I go back, It is like I never left and that I had been there with them everyday. That hole in my heart just fills right up, infact it overflows with warmth, acceptance and love ❤ Love you all from the bottom of my heart.

So, Where do I start ?

Let’s just let the camera roll do most of the talking Shall we ?

D.I.Y Paris Love <3

IMG_1534

As promised, Here is my post on D.I.Y Wooden cut-outs RHY Style.

I’ve always wanted to have stylised wooden letters, not just the regular white ones you always see in shop windows, but the crafty D.I.Y styled ones that have a touch of emotion and nostalgia, something a little more personal. So while my room is in the making, I have been busy coming up with ideas and inspirations with things that I love.

Paris being one of them !

Now for this project all you need is:

1 – Some wooden “Kaiser Kraft” cut-outs that look like this. I have bought mine from Spotlight in Australia. You can get them from any crafts and hobby store that sells sewing equipment and scrapbooking supplies. The two packets that I bought had these particular ones in them.

IMG_1467

2 – Big wooden letters and words for D.I.Y can also be found at these stores however you can get them from hardware stores as well. I have bought my wooden Word from “Bunning’s” and as you can see I’ve chosen the word LOVE ❤

IMG_1468

3 – Some paint – any colour you like, and to be honest it can be any paint around the house. You don’t really need much of it depending on what size your word is. I’ve just used some gouache paint I had leftover from my colour theory classes in design school. You can use the same too. (If you find gouache paint a little to expensive, you don’t have to get an artist grade one, you can just get a cheap one from the dollar store. – it really doesn’t matter what kind of paint it is – we want something that dries quickly for effect)

IMG_1470

4 – Scrap booking or craft paper of your choice. ( This depends on what you wish to cover your wooden cut-outs in. If you want to have them just painted then you need not worry about the paper, however it does at quite a nice clean-cut effect to really make things stand out)

Scrapbooking paper can be found in A lot of places, stationary stores, fabric and craft and hobby stores – a great one for bulk and reasonably priced variety is Alice in paper land. Be sure to Google them.

IMG_1481

AND you will obviously need, a pencil, scissors, 2 paintbrushes ( one for glue and the other for paint) , some fabric glue,or craft or wood glue – anything that bonds really, some rolls of thin coloured satin ribbon ( your choice), paper towels, scrapbooking or craft paper.

Let’s Begin

1 – Layout some paper towels, two layers of it, in the length of your letter/word ( This is so we don’t ruin the lovely bench top you are working on ha-ha )

 IMG_1471

2 – Squeeze a small pee size amount of gouache, or whatever paint in whatever colour you are using for the wooden word onto either the paper towel, your brush or the word itself ( whichever way you work comfortably) and start by dabbing the paint onto wood. ( keep applying more paint as you are dabbing across the word, the quicker you work and dab the better it is when working with gouache. )

IMG_1473

3 – The look we are going for isn’t a nice brush stroked finish, it’s a dabbed, vintage style application. So rough brush marks done via dabbing the paintbrush onto the wood will create this effect. ( However, if you want it clean cut then by all means go ahead and paint it the way you like ). If you look closely into the images you will see the effect I am talking about.

Note: if you are working with gouache, I found that it dried pretty quickly as I was dabbing it, this helps create that effect even better. It also means you have to move quickly along the word without applying wet gouache in semi-dry areas or else patching will occur. If patching does occur, simply wait for the whole word to dry and apply the second coat again by dabbing.

IMG_1474

4 – Okay so we leave it aside now and wait for it to dry. It must be dried properly or else patching will occur. If it does – just read the above note.

5  – We also want to get into the sides of the letters on the wood to give it a roughed up paint look.

IMG_1480

5 – As you can see in the image above, I haven’t applied paint again to my brush, just with the amount of paint on my brush I am rubbing the paintbrush so it has a painted but-not effect.

Prepping the cut-outs

Now we move onto prepping the cut-outs. So for the final product I painted my cut-outs but in case you have chosen the method of covering them with paper here is how to do it.

1 – First place your cut-out on the paper and see where you would like certain parts of it to fall. I have placed mine on a diagonal as I wish half words and half images to fall on the wood.

IMG_1483

2 – We now trace around the it with our pencil and we cut it out.

IMG_1484

3 – Glue the paper to the cut-out using our craft glue

IMG_1485

I’ve just got fabric glue – it doesn’t REALLLYYY matter, just use anything that bonds around the house that isn’t going to seep through the paper.

IMG_1486

4 – Brush the glue onto the cut-out and then carefully place the paper onto it.

IMG_1487

5 – Turn the cut-out around. As you can see there are some parts that are slightly bigger than the cut-out. If you can, get your scissor or blade and just carefully cut it away.

IMG_1488

6 – OR you can also use your scissors to smooth down the edges around the wooden cut-out.

IMG_1496

7 – To add final touches to your mannequin we can cut some of our coloured satin ribbon and fold it into a bow.

IMG_1497

8 – We then just glue it onto our cut-out piece wherever we like.

You can also use sequins or beads, even feathers to get the effect you like.

IMG_1498

As I mentioned before it really makes the idea stand out – When I chose these wooden mannequins I also went searching for patterned paper or something that was very “fashiony” and stood for “raw design” and there I found scrapbooking paper with illustrations and pattern instructions – as we can see it looks very nice and the final touch of adding a bow completes this cut-out.

Painting our pieces.

1 – Place the cut-out down onto the paper towel, apply the paint and again just dab it on.

IMG_1500

2 – As it comes to dry, lightly place another paper towel on top and press it.

This will get rid of any excess gouache and will also help it dry faster. ( less mess Smile)

IMG_1502

3 – Peel it back

IMG_1503

and now we add our extras.

4 – Again you may add other bits and pieces that you like, or you can even leave it plain.

IMG_1504

I’ve just added a red bow, as it looked nice with the black/brown paint on the Eiffel cut-out.

IMG_1506

I used this craft ribbon. It’s 3mm wide and is great for craft use ! I bought it from spotlight but I’m sure you can get it from any craft and hobby store, even cheap dollar stores. They come in a wide range of colours and even have other widths.

IMG_1508

5 – after we have prepped our piece, we then glue the back of it and place it on the wooden word (wherever you like to put it – I would suggest before you start you figure out exactly where you like it before painting )

IMG_1509

Ta-Da ! there is our Eiffel

IMG_1510

I’ve also decided to add a lamppost – again we prep the piece with paint.

IMG_1511

Dry it

IMG_1512

Now this time I am going to add a bit of paper to it to create that signage effect. I quite like the colour of this coffee stained paper so I’m just going to cut a square out – roughly by the measurements of the space where the sign is on the lamppost.

IMG_1513

IMG_1514

Glue it down and stick it on

IMG_1515

IMG_1516

We are not going to dab around the cut edge with our black paintbrush to give it a blended vintage effect and to create some layering.

IMG_1517

This is the kind of effect you get

IMG_1519

Some final touches to our wooden word before applying the lamppost to it.

IMG_1522

Gluing some of the red ribbon just on the bottom edge of the Wooden word for added effect and we press it down to hold.

IMG_1524

As you can see I have cut the piece of ribbon a little bit longer than the final length so we can glue it and press it right back around

IMG_1526

IMG_1527

IMG_1529

Now we glue on our lamppost

IMG_1532

AND VOILA !

there we have it…

my Love ❤ for Paris.

Ready for when I move back into my room !

IMG_1533

I’m currently waiting for it all to dry but you may choose to write something in metallic pen or ink pen on the lamppost signage.

Well I hope you all enjoyed it and got the instructions = ]

Photo-shoot Prep | Rainy day outside but a rather sunny one at T.L.O.R Headquarters !

Woke up this morning and let’s be honest – who didn’t want to go back to bed with the weather being so S#!t ????? As you could of imagined what was supposed to be a bright summer awakening started to feel like a rather sluggish wintery morning! BUT that didn’t necessarily mean a fun days of work wasn’t about to begin.

Here at T.L.O.R head quarters I have been busy expanding the RATAVOSI men’s and women’s collection with additional women’s looks for our Amore Amore Photo-shoot.

I’ve been crazily sourcing props and accessories from all over the place as well as locations to give the right touch to all our looks.

In fact, Perfect Timing for Valentine’s Day !!!!

Mid last week, I ordered a cute red wide brimmed hat and some cat eye sunnies to go with the “midnight rendezvous dress” (oh and a pair of white ear muffs JUST FOR FUN hahaha)– what felt like a knock and run today, brightened mine and my best friends day.

2 brown parcels from ASOS… oh yes oh yess !! Happily tearing apart the boxes, there they were ! It always feels so exciting and rewarding when you get a parcel at the door, I love the feeling, it almost feels like it’s your birthday ha !

And well knowing the two of us ( the usual ) decided to do a silly little luvo session with the new pieces.

Just a regular day at the office. Check it out  haha

Goodbye 2011 | One Last time.

So 2011 is gone… Wow Here’s Goodbye to one of the most “Hectic” Years of my life.

A lot actually Happened in 2011 for me – I Think the last couple of months were actually the most busiest months of the year to be honest, in terms of it all coming to an end ( together!) before Christmas and new years !

As I mentioned There’s been a lot of Farewells, girls night outs and the new one – a love ! I’ll share it with you now so we can hit off 2012 with a spark !

The Girls Night Outs | Novembre

It would be wrong for me to say that 2011 turned me into a workaholic because I’d started to be like that ever since I started my bachelor degree, so in that case I’ll use the terms Choice and Risks. This year I became MORE OF the workaholic that I had already become – Not taking breaks, getting to college and immediately going to my level to start/finish my work instead of chilling out front, going to bed late and waking up a few hours later to finish up work, not making time for girls night outs/ get togethers, not attending events I would usually be the first one to say yes to etc. This last semester specially, I had fallen into a habit of not making it to kick-backs at my best friends house, because I was simply and truthfully not making time for anything ( not even my health – clearly) besides my assessments, It was too much of a risk for me to take. I’d say “oh yeh I might come depending on how it goes” and all night I’d be killing myself and working on my assessments and designs meanwhile the girls were chillaxing and enjoying each others company with sweets and cups of tea ! I started to realise after my surgery just how much I missed it – and how horrible it felt that when I came back to thinking when the last time it was that the four of us were all present (ESPECIALLY ME),it was quite a vague memory ! Yes we are always there for each other and yes we always care but sometimes thoughts over actual presence doesn’t count. So where risk taking and choices come in is when I decided to ( in the midst of all the surgery stress and deadline mayhem) erase the word Priority and replace it with “Rhaya-say-yes-to-a-break-every-now-and-then-…please!” and so I did. I was there 10 pm, dead tired, eyes almost rolling back into whatever was left of my brain at my best friends Tuscan Avenue house for the very last time before they moved. I said yes to other things like that too like coffee catch ups and even a date and get-to-know. This probably may not make sense but the whole choice, risks and “Rhaya-say-yes-to-a-break-every-now-and-then-…please!” plays a very important part in “The love | Decembre”

The love | Decembre

So every year on my birthday I get crazy about making a wish – I have to make a wish, It’s just my thing– Its dumb because it probably never ever comes true but in case that one time it does – I always do ha-ha ! I usually make the same wish – typical – “I hope I find a normal boyfriend, I hope I don’t die lonely, I hope I find love, I want it to last and be perfect and blah blah blah” and other than wishing for that I also wish for a successful career, beautiful life and and a great year la la la. So having lost a little bit of hope in the love sector I said to myself you know this year I’m not going to wish for that, there is no point in wasting my wishing minutes on something as stupid as that !

So instead I wished for my studies – so that I could be given the strength to finish and meet the deadline for the men’s and women’s collection marking as well as making all three looks from the mini range into the fashion show, self fulfilment. ( mind you – that came true … Thank god! )

A few weeks before my birthday I was sharing a coke with cupid, and I said to him “you know I didn’t wish for love for my birthday this time but because we’re having a friendly dnm here do you think you can adjust your aim a little and maybe hit a bullseye on someone – just one person – who will be great for me ?” And He said to me “you know I think If you speak to my friend Santa pretty sure he can do seal the deal for you” – So i Shared a coke with Santa and he said “you know I’ll give you one wish – any thing” –and I said “all I want for Christmas is what I didn’t wish for this year, that I wish for every year – a click, a normal person that I can look to and say hey you’re my partner and I’m very glad you’re here with me and we can do this thing called life together, Someone who is strong enough to carry not only me but themselves – ( to be, at the same time, calm and collected when I’m not !)”. A few Weeks after that I Took a risk and one of those “Rhaya-say-yes-to-a-break-every-now-and-then-…please!” – I gave it another chance, one last chance and kaboom ! The start of December and I’m in a relationship – it’s almost been a month and I’m really happy !

It just magically happened, it’s funny how when you don’t wish for it and when you don’t want it so much, that it just happens – I don’t even know how it happened but it was the choices I made – the taking breaks and taking it easy thing – its how it all fell into place. By giving things a chance I was able to fulfil one last thing I’d been longing for.

The great ending of 2011 has rolled into 2012 and I quite like how It’s going and where It’s at – I think I’ll look at it positively and say its for the better and that everything that I’ve been through and experienced both good and bad was worth it. Here’s a big one to 2012, I hope you’re a great year ! One definitely to remember !

One last time | 2011 I’d like to say a sarcastic thankyou for all the hard times and suffering you put me through and a heartfelt thankyou for the beautiful memories, dnm’s, and the happy ending you gave !

Epiphany | a sudden realisation | November You always do this to me

Bonjour Novembre | month of realisation!!

Status : Enlightened

I love this month because every year not only do I celebrate my birthday but somehow I always experience some sort of personal/emotional growth. Something always happens to me leading up to this month or during this month that makes me take a few steps back to brood over the year before the final month arrives !

A light breeze through my curtain and a ray of sunshine peaking through the top.

This was the morning of the first day of November, 2011.

I’m a very open-minded person. A bright, bubbly person who is very passionate and determined at almost every point within life.

I put in 100% in my work – my Fashion is my life. I made it that way because no matter what I will always get back what I put into it, “Self fulfilment”. It is something that nothing can give you unless you allow yourself to find it and accept it. Let people laugh and judge as much as they like, but dream what you want to and be realistic about it.

I’m in third year, my final year and I love it. My collections and ideas, each and every one is a little bit of me. A souvenir of the many strange, loved, unique – priceless bits and pieces of my emotions and personality unleashed in every single one. The pressure, the stress, the expectations, the deadlines – It plays with your head. Whether you learn to accept it or not – either way it’s a choice you make. Are you cut out for it ? Can you do it ? Sooner or later you will be in a big world by yourself – no mentor, no lecturer, nobody – NOBODY but yourself to try and understand and to figure out what it is YOU really WANT. You may think I’m crazy, but this is the life of a fashion design student. It’s Tough. Endless hours spent on developments, designs, patternmaking and sampling – being a student, one goes insane.

I am pedantic, persistent and most of the time a perfectionist. But I believe that if you want to be successful you have to be able to be that as well as being able to contort yourself within a variety of characteristics. No excuses. Change in this industry is inevitable – Fashion never stands still.

I am not saying I‘m perfect, nobody is, in fact I’m that little bit crazy. However, We were created with flaws – we were born to be different and to feel emotions, to feel needy and lonely or to cry and laugh, to have tantrums and be childish, to make silly assumptions, yet to grow and embark on journeys around the world, to be faced with challenges and to learn how to conquer them.

And just sometimes we need someone who can provide us with the truth and tell us when we are squinting. Squinting at the world, at a situation, something immature, or something serious. That’s what friends, family, colleagues, partners are for.

My life, the last 7 months changed rapidly. I started to become more weak and tired, my bones would ache, and my spine would cramp. Though like the famous Chanel, I worked hard throughout it all. Acting like nothing was wrong, like a machine, running all day. I remember wishing and wanting to be bored, Wanting to be able to relax and to lie down for a week and do nothing. Just to have the time to read a book, stare at a wall or into the distance – to do anything BUT work. I knew myself that I would never back down though, nothing could stop me unless I was stopped. Why on earth would I drop all my work to read a book ? Never was it going to happen, I wouldn’t do that to myself. Although I did something else to myself, made myself sick, by now you should sense that being the work-a-holic I became wasn’t healthy. Somehow, something granted me that wish of relief though.

A few months back I got told I had to have surgery – it never occurred to me then but it does now, the mysterious way things happen for a reason.

I’m not saying I’m thankful for being sick, nobody would be. No sane person would ever want to go through any form of excruciating pain or the thought of having to learn how to walk again.

If anything I was thankful for being able to have found myself again. Especially, the tremendous amounts of support I received from people whom I never thought would be there.

Naturally open minded, I squint very rarely, but it opened my eyes.

When you are down and tired and you’ve had enough of the world and everyone in it, you think that no one will miss you and that no one cares but in fact that exclusive personality, the job that you do it leaves a footprint within the lives of others. You don’t realise until you are sick on a bed, day after day, struggling to put your foot on the ground and learning how to walk and sit again like a little puppy, just how much they miss you and need you.

All this because a friend approached me this morning and struck an emotional chord within my heart, all this because she cares. She knows who she is and I love her for it.

We all go through realisations in life, and this is one I’m sharing with you.
Some of you may not understand what this post means but for those of you who do or for those of you who know the feeling – you’d agree with me when i say :

“Hope isn’t lost, It’s just a tiny glitch in what is otherwise known as the longest journey you’ll ever experience.”

xxxx

Much Love, Yours Truly
